Filho de John Aris e Josette Aris, Michael Vaillancourt Aris nasceu a 27 de março de 1946 em Havana, Cuba. Em 1967 completou o curso de história moderna em St. Cuthbert’s Society, Universidade de Durham. Nos seis anos seguintes foi o tutor privado dos filhos da família real do Butão.
Amante de história asiática, Aris foi professor universitário desta vertente da história no St. John’s College, em Oxford. Paralelamente escreveu e palestrou sobre a cultura e história do Butão, Tibete e Himalaias.
O seu falecimento data de 27 de março de 1999 (53 anos).
