Biographical history

José Carlos Loureiro nasceu em 2 de dezembro de 1925, na Covilhã. Filho de João Loureiro e de Maria da Conceição Loureiro. José Carlos Loureiro, o mais novo de dois filhos, casou com Maria José de Morais Carvalho Geraldes Coelho, em 1950, com quem teve dois filhos, José Manuel Geraldes Coelho Louceiro e Maria Teresa Geraldes Coelho Loureiro.
Ingressou na Escola de Belas Artes do Porto no ano escolar de 1941-42, concluindo a sua formação académica em 1950. Nesta data inicia a sua atividade de arquiteto como profissional liberal e docente (2º assistente) na Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto.
Em 1972 abandona a carreira docente para se dedicar exclusivamente ao exercício da arquitetura como profissão liberal.
Em 1976, em colaboração com o Arq. Luís Pádua Ramos, seu colaborador na altura, constitui a GALP, Lda (Gabinete de Urbanismo, Arquitectura e Engenharia, Lda).
Em 1992, retomou a docência, na qualidade de professor convidado da Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto.
Participou em colóquios, congressos e exposições de caráter nacional e internacional, desempenhou cargos diretivos em associações representativas da profissão e exerceu funções em cargos de vereação camarária no município do Porto. Em 2009 foi-lhe atribuída a Medalha Municipal de Mérito, Grau de Ouro.
A obra projetada do arquiteto encontra-se dispersa por um amplo território geográfico, com uma maior incidência no Porto e no Norte de Portugal, variando entre as habitações uni e plurifamiliares, de caráter cultural, hospitalar e outros equipamentos. Como referências desse extenso universo cita-se o Edifício Parnaso (Porto 1954-56), a Pousada de São Bartolomeu (Bragança, 1954-60), os Edifícios Luso-Lima (Porto, 1958-72), o Mercado Municipal de Barcelos (1968-70), o Palácio de Desportos (Porto, 1951-52), o Hotel D. Henrique (Porto, 1965-72) e os Edifícios Residenciais de Aveiro (1968-72). Enquanto arquiteto, José Carlos Loureiro teve como colaboradores, nos seus escritórios, Alcino Soutinho, Anni Gunther, Carlos Chaves de Almeida, José Gomes Fernandes, Luís Cunha, Manuel Correia Fernandes, Maria Noémia Coutinho, Noé Dinis (estagiário), Pádua Ramos e Rogério Cavaca (estagiário), entre outros.
José Calos Loureiro faleceu no dia 30 de agosto de 2022.

Archival history

José Carlos Loureiro was born on 2 December 1925 in Covilhã. He is the younger of João Loureiro and Maria da Conceição Loureiro’s two children. He married Maria José de Morais Carvalho Geraldes Coelho in 1950, and they also had two children, José Manuel Geraldes Coelho Louceiro and Maria Teresa Geraldes Coelho Loureiro.
He began studying at the Porto School of Fine Arts in the 1941-42 academic year and competed his academic training in 1950. In the 1950s he began working as an architect and as a lecturer (2nd assistant) at the Porto School of Fine Arts.
In 1972 he gave up his teaching career to work solely as an architect.
In 1976, together with architect Luís Pádua Ramos who was working with him at that time, he established GALP, Lda (Office of Urbanism, Architecture and Civil Engineering).
In 1992, he resumed his teaching career as a guest lecturer at Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto.
He participated in national and international meetings, conferences and exhibitions. He held executive positions in architecture associations and he was a member of Porto municipal council. In 2009 he was awarded the Gold Medal of Municipal Merit.
The architectural designs of José Carlos Loureiro are spread across a wide geographical area, with a higher incidence in the regions of Porto and the North of Portugal. They include homes for one or several families, cultural buildings, health facilities and other amenities. His works include the Edifício Parnaso (Porto 1954-56), the Pousada de São Bartolomeu (Bragança, 1954-60), the Luso-Lima Buildings (Porto, 1958-72), the Municipal Market of Barcelos (1968-70), the Palácio de Desportos [Sports Complex] (Porto, 1951-52), the D. Henrique Hotel (Porto, 1965-72) and the Residential Buildings of Aveiro (1968-72).

The information collection was donated by architect José Carlos Loureiro, through a contract signed on 26 September 2013.
